13 Foods You Should Never Refrigerate

Done with the shopping and now thinking to just go home and put all the stuff you bought from the grocery section into your refrigerator? It is our common practice that we just want to use our fridge to store all kind of foods whether they are needed or not. Not everyone does this; but most of us will be agreeing to it. Well, there are many food items for which we get confused whether to keep them in the fridge or not. For instance butter, we store it in the fridge but when we take it out, it’s so hard to spread it on the toast. What to do now? The answer is simple, store it in the fridge and just take it out 10 to 15 minutes before the breakfast. Well, it was the story of butter and we have decided that we can store it in the fridge.

There are many other foods that are pretty much easier to decide whether to store in the fridge or not. We can say that there are some foods that can’t bear refrigeration; they either lose their flavour or the texture or sometimes get the mould.  There are the chances that you might be storing some foods mistakenly in your fridge, maybe you have listened to someone or thought yourself. Here is the list of some of the foods that you should keep on your kitchen counter (or any other place you have) instead of the refrigerator. Let’s have a look:

  1. Tomatoes

Oh no! I put them in the refrigerator, this is not right! You know what? Putting them in the fridge will not let them ripen due to which they don’t give the good flavour. Not only this, it will also change the texture of the pulp. The cold temperature causes the break down in the membranes of the walls thus bringing the change. OK, I will be keeping them on my kitchen counter.

  1. Bread

Do you refrigerate the bread? Yes, what’s wrong with that? When you refrigerate the whole bread that is not sliced it dries out, you can keep it in the freezer or on the counter. Keep the bread wrapped in the freezer so that it will lose its moisture and after thawing it you will enjoy the soft bread, toast it or make the sandwiches from it.

  1. Honey

Honey does not need to be stored in the fridge. When you keep the honey in the fridge after sometime crystallization occurs in it.  You won’t like to feel the crystals in your mouth while having honey, Will you? Just keep it tightly sealed and it will be good outside the fridge.

  1. Melons

If you haven’t cut the melon then don’t keep it in the refrigerator. Research has indicated that the melon placed in the room temperature, it actually keeps the antioxidant levels unaffected. Once you have cut it, keep it in the fridge.

  1. Onions

Like the tomatoes, when you put the onions in the fridge they become mushy. So don’t put them in the fridge, if you have wrapped the sliced onion tightly then still the drying up process will continue. Well, I know this, who puts the onion in the fridge?

  1. Garlic

Garlic has the strong smell and it will make your fridge stinky making the other things having its flavour too. Also, it will be losing its flavour so it’s good to keep it out.

Fresh garlic

  1. Avocados

Refrigerating avocados stop the ripening process so don’t refrigerate them. If you have bought the ripened ones then you can keep them in the fridge to stop the ripening process.

  1. Bananas

Do you put the bananas directly in the fridge? Banana is a tropical fruit and it is not resistant to the cold. So if you have bought the green bananas then keep them out.

  1. Potatoes

When you refrigerate the potatoes what actually happens to them, is, the starch is broken down and you will be getting the gritty and sweet flavoured potato, that don’t taste bad. But if you don’t want to give your meals to have the sweet flavour then please don’t refrigerate them.

  1. Cake

A simple cake that does not have the cream on it, just put it in the airtight container so that it will not dry up.

  1. Coffee

Whether coffee is in the powdered form or bean from, don’t store it in the fridge. When you put it in the fridge then it takes the smells from the surrounding and you will not be able to get its original flavour back. Another problem is if it will get the moisture then this might cause the desaturation of the flavour.

  1. Fresh herbs

Fresh herbs will be taking the smell of the other things present in their surrounding and also they will be losing their flavour as they will be drying up. If you wish to refrigerate them, then keep them in the airtight container so that they won’t lose their moisture.

  1. Berries

Fresh berries taste really good at the room temperature. If you want to store it for a long time obviously you will be needed to refrigerate them.

These were the food items that you should not keep in the refrigerator. Keep them out until or unless it is very necessary or you want to store them for a long time.  We know that the flavour, texture and the nutrients of the food are very important for you and you would like to add the maximum flavour of the different vegetables and the fruits that you use in preparing your food.
